Be at the gates before opening, ride TRON Lightcycle / Run first, take Space Mountain while you are still in Tomorrowland, then cross to Frontierland and Adventureland before 10am, because those are the lines that climb fastest. Save Fantasyland's two long lines, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Peter Pan's Flight, for the last hour on a late-close night. Fill the middle of the day with the indoor rides that never build much of a line at all.

That order comes straight from the hourly wait times recorded on the Magic Kingdom live page. Park-wide, lines average 16 minutes at 9am and 28 minutes at 7pm, so simply being early is worth about 12 minutes on every line you join.

What the data says about a typical day

Magic Kingdom's lines average 21 minutes across the days recorded, but the headline rides sit well above that. TRON Lightcycle / Run is the longest line in the park at 55 minutes on a typical day, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is next at 43, then Peter Pan's Flight at 38. Everything else in the table below averages between 13 and 32 minutes.

Two patterns shape the day. First, the shortest readings for almost every headline ride fall in the 8am hour over the last 28 days, and the long-run record on each ride page says lines ease again around noon. Second, most headline rides post their worst readings at 3pm or 4pm on the long-run record, and the reliability page shows breakdowns cluster in exactly those two hours, with 169 closures starting at 3pm and 171 at 4pm out of 1,043 recorded. Mid-afternoon is the wrong time to be standing in a long line for anything.

Ride Land Typical wait Shortest hour Peak hour
TRON Lightcycle / Run Tomorrowland 55 min 8am, 34 min 8pm, 78 min
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Fantasyland 43 min 10pm, 29 min 7pm, 51 min
Peter Pan's Flight Fantasyland 38 min 10pm, 21 min 6pm, 45 min
Tiana's Bayou Adventure Frontierland 32 min 8am, 10 min noon, 40 min
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Frontierland 29 min 8am, 14 min 7pm, 38 min
Space Mountain Tomorrowland 28 min 8am, 18 min 11am, 35 min
Jungle Cruise Adventureland 28 min 8am, 10 min 11am, 34 min
Haunted Mansion Liberty Square 20 min 8am, 12 min 7pm, 24 min
Pirates of the Caribbean Adventureland 13 min 8am, 5 min 11am, 21 min

Shortest and peak hours are each ride's own last 28 days of readings. The typical wait is its long-run average.

Rope drop: Tomorrowland first

Walt Disney World hotel guests get early theme park entry ahead of the general public. The site does not record how many minutes that is, so check the official Walt Disney World site for your dates. Everyone else should be through the gates before the published opening time, which on the hours page is 9am most days and 8am on some, as published by the park.

Go straight to TRON Lightcycle / Run. It averages 34 minutes in the 8am hour and 78 minutes at 8pm, a 44 minute gap that is the biggest swing of any ride in the park. It never has a quiet hour later: the 28 day pattern shows it at 47 minutes or more from 11am onwards and 66 to 78 minutes through the evening. If you only get one ride at a walk-up price, this is it.

Space Mountain is a few steps away and averages 18 minutes at 8am, climbing to 35 by 11am. Ride it second. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and the PeopleMover are in the same land and can wait; the PeopleMover averages 8 minutes all day.

By 10am: Frontierland and Adventureland

These two lands hold the lines that climb fastest after opening, so they are the second stop, not the last.

  • Tiana's Bayou Adventure goes from 10 minutes at 8am to 26 at 10am and 40 by noon. It is the fastest-rising line in the park.
  • Jungle Cruise goes from 10 minutes at 8am to 32 at 10am and stays there.
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad goes from 14 minutes at 8am to 28 at 10am and 34 by noon.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean rises from 5 minutes at 8am to 21 at 11am, but its long-run typical wait is only 13 minutes, so it is the one to drop if you are running late.

The sensible loop is Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, then Jungle Cruise, with Pirates of the Caribbean as a bonus if the line is under 15 minutes. Tiana's is a log flume and you will get wet, which is fine at 9am in Florida and less fine in January.

Midday: the heat lull and the indoor rides

The long-run record on nearly every ride page says lines are shortest around noon, and the best time to visit page confirms park-wide averages flatten at 24 to 25 minutes from 11am to 5pm. The morning climb stops because people go to lunch and out of the sun. This is the window for indoor, air-conditioned rides with lines that never really build.

Haunted Mansion averages 20 minutes and never posts an hourly reading above 24. Pirates of the Caribbean drops back to 14 minutes at 2pm. "it's a small world" averages 11 minutes, Under the Sea - Journey of The Little Mermaid 10, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh 27. String those together between 1pm and 4pm and you spend the hottest part of the day in the shade while the coaster lines are at their worst.

There is an afternoon parade down Main Street on most days. The site's hourly data does not show a clean parade lull on the headline rides; several dip a little at 2pm to 4pm, but the long-run record still calls 3pm and 4pm the worst hours for most of them. Treat the parade as a reason to avoid Main Street, not as a reliable moment to sprint to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Evening: fireworks and the last hour

Cinderella Castle hosts fireworks nightly, and the hour before them is the busiest of the day for lines, not the quietest. Park-wide waits peak at 28 minutes around 7pm. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train peaks at 7pm with 51 minutes, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at 7pm with 38, Peter Pan's Flight at 6pm with 45, and TRON Lightcycle / Run at 8pm with 78.

The lull comes after. On a late-close night the park-wide average falls to 20 minutes at 9pm and 17 minutes at 10pm. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train drops to 31 minutes at 9pm and 29 at 10pm, Peter Pan's Flight to 24 and then 21, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to 25 and then 21. That is why the two Fantasyland lines are saved for last: their quietest hour is the final one, and the saving against their evening peak is 22 to 24 minutes each.

The exception is TRON Lightcycle / Run, which reads 66 minutes at 9pm and 76 at 10pm. Do not save it. Check the hours page for your date, because closing time varies between 6pm and 11pm in the published September schedule and a 6pm close has no late lull at all.

A workable evening on a 10pm close: Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean around 7pm while everyone else lines up for the fireworks view, watch the show from the hub, then Peter Pan's Flight and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in the last hour.

Lightning Lane, breakdowns and picking the day

Every number on this site is the standby line, the figure the park publishes for people without a return time. Disney sells Lightning Lane as a paid option that lets you skip that line at a booked time. The site does not include Lightning Lane in its standby figures and does not publish its prices, so treat it as a separate decision. On the data above, the only ride where the standby line stays long all day is TRON Lightcycle / Run, so if you buy one thing, that is the obvious candidate.

Breakdowns matter as much as lines. Across the last 60 operating days, 24 tracked rides ran 87.4% of opening hours. The rides that go down most are Main Street Vehicles at 55.2% uptime, the Walt Disney World Railroad Fantasyland stop at 74.5%, Tiana's Bayou Adventure at 86%, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at 87.6%, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at 88.1% with 73 recorded breakdowns. The most reliable headline rides are Peter Pan's Flight at 99.1%, TRON Lightcycle / Run at 97%, Haunted Mansion at 96.2% and Pirates of the Caribbean at 95.1%. This is another argument for riding Tiana's and Big Thunder in the morning: they are the two headline rides most likely to be shut when you come back later. Park Queue Times Plus can send an alert when a ride you are waiting on reopens.

On the day itself, the crowd calendar gives a forecast for every date. Across 348 recorded days, September is the quietest month at 53% crowd level and February the busiest at 73%. Sunday averages 59% against 65% on Saturday, but weekdays and weekends both average 62%, so the month you choose matters far more than the weekday. The almanac explains how those forecasts are scored against what the lines actually did.

Questions people ask

Which ride should I do first at Magic Kingdom?

TRON Lightcycle / Run. It is the longest line in the park at 55 minutes on a typical day, it averages 34 minutes in the 8am hour, and unlike the other headline rides it never has a quiet hour later on. Space Mountain is next door and also at its shortest at 8am.

Is there a good time to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train?

The last hour on a late-close night. It averages 29 minutes at 10pm and 31 at 9pm against 51 at its 7pm peak. In the morning it is already 33 minutes at 8am, so it is not the best use of your rope drop.

Does the parade or the fireworks empty the lines?

Not in the way people expect. The hour before the fireworks is the busiest of the day park-wide at 28 minutes, and the afternoon parade only produces small dips on a few rides. The real lull is after the fireworks, when the park-wide average drops to 17 minutes by 10pm.

Which Magic Kingdom rides break down most?

Over the last 60 operating days the lowest uptime among the rides people plan around is Tiana's Bayou Adventure at 86%, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at 87.6% and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at 88.1%. Breakdowns cluster at 3pm and 4pm, so ride those three earlier in the day and check the reliability page before you go.
