A queue-first one day plan for Alton Towers

Ride Nemesis Reborn, Rita and Th13teen before noon, Wicker Man late, and use the reliability figures on the day. A plan built from Alton Towers queue data.

Be through the gates at opening, walk straight to the far end of the park and ride Nemesis Reborn, Galactica, Rita and Th13teen before noon, because those four more than double their queues in the first 2 hours. Take The Smiler and Oblivion over lunch when they dip, and leave Wicker Man for the last hour, because it is already a 50 minute queue at 10am and does not get much worse until it finally eases at the end of the day. The figures are from the Alton Towers pages on this site.

The park is big and the ends matter

Alton Towers is the UK's largest theme park, set in 910 acres of Staffordshire woodland around a gothic country house. The rides are spread around the edges of that estate with the gardens in the middle, so most of your day is spent walking between areas rather than between rides. The park description on this site puts it plainly: a rural valley with limited paths means queues build quickly on busy days.

  • The car parks are a monorail ride from the entrance. The site tracks "Monorail to Entrance Plaza" as a ride with a typical wait of about 9 minutes, and the return "Monorail to Hotels and Car Parks" at about 8 minutes. Be on the monorail before opening, not arriving at the car park at opening.
  • The Skyride cable car links Towers Street, Forbidden Valley and Dark Forest. On the reliability page all four Skyride legs sit at the bottom of the table at about 48% uptime, down on 60 of 60 days recorded. Plan every leg of the day as a walk and treat the Skyride as a bonus if it happens to be running.
  • The big coasters sit at the far end from the entrance. Nemesis Reborn and Galactica are in Forbidden Valley, Rita and Th13teen next door in Dark Forest. The Galactica page notes the walk from the entrance can take 15 minutes, which on a quiet day is longer than the queue.

The headline rides, ordered by how fast they climb

The figures below are each ride's own hourly pattern over its last 28 recorded days, as shown on its page. Sorted by how much the queue grows between 10am and its peak, which is the number that decides the order of your morning.

Ride Typical wait At 10am Peak Quietest hour
Nemesis Reborn 38 min 24 min 52 min at noon 10am, 24 min
Rita 42 min 24 min 51 min at noon 6pm, 23 min
Th13teen 39 min 25 min 50 min at noon 6pm, 22 min
Galactica 44 min 30 min 48 min at noon 10am, 30 min
The Smiler 47 min 41 min 57 min at 11am 6pm, 32 min
Oblivion 24 min 21 min 34 min at 11am 6pm, 17 min
Wicker Man 49 min 50 min 54 min at 11am 6pm, 33 min

Two things stand out. Nemesis Reborn, Rita and Th13teen are the cheapest rides in the park at 10am and among the dearest by noon, so they are the opening moves. Wicker Man is the opposite: it is the longest queue at opening, climbs only 4 minutes to its peak, and the only hour that is genuinely different is 6pm.

Park-wide, the best time page shows the average queue at 16 minutes at 10am, 22 minutes at noon and 18 minutes by 4pm. Walking in at opening rather than at the peak is worth about 6 minutes on every queue you join.

The plan, from opening to closing

Most days open at 10am, as published by the park on the opening hours page. Weekday closes are often 4pm, and weekends and event dates run later, so check your date before you lock the last hour in.

10am to noon, the far end

Walk from Towers Street to Forbidden Valley without stopping. Nemesis Reborn first, at its 24 minute low, then Galactica next door while it is at its quietest hour. Galactica is worth doing now rather than later because it is the one headline ride that does not ease in the evening: it is still 45 minutes at 5pm and 41 at 6pm.

Cross into Dark Forest for Rita and Th13teen. Both are around 24 minutes at 10am and around 50 by noon, so the order does not matter as much as finishing both before noon. If one is down, ride the other and check back; both are on the patchy side of the reliability table.

Noon to 2pm, X-Sector over lunch

The Smiler's hourly chart peaks at 57 minutes at 11am and drops to 48 at noon and 1pm, so this is when to join it, or use the single rider queue, which the site lists for The Smiler, Oblivion, Galactica, Th13teen, Spinball Whizzer and Toxicator. Oblivion is 30 minutes at noon and 25 at 1pm, so a lunch stop between the two costs little.

2pm to 4pm, the lull

Park-wide averages ease from 21 minutes at 2pm to 18 at 4pm. This is the window for the rides that never build a serious queue. The Curse at Alton Manor runs about 6 minutes typical, Hex about 12, Toxicator about 12 and Nemesis Sub-Terra about 14. Spinball Whizzer is the trap in this group at about 41 minutes typical, so use its single rider line or skip it.

On a 4pm close, the last hour starts here. Head to Mutiny Bay and ride Wicker Man at 3pm, when the chart shows 49 minutes, rather than at 1pm when it shows 54.

The last hour on a late day

On days that close at 9pm the 6pm hour is where the headline rides finally collapse: Oblivion 17 minutes, Th13teen 22, Rita 23, Nemesis Reborn 29, The Smiler 32, Wicker Man 33. Do Wicker Man first, then anything you missed; its page notes the flame effects are far more visible after dark.

The family version

If you are with children who will not clear the big coaster height limits, flip the plan. CBeebies Land is near the entrance and its queues are not small: the park page shows Bluey the Ride at about 44 minutes typical, Get Set Go Tree Top Adventure about 35, Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure about 33 and In The Night Garden Magical Boat Ride about 31. Do those four first, at opening, then the walk-on ones (Hey Duggee, JoJo and Gran Gran, Justin's House, all around 5 to 8 minutes) whenever you pass.

After CBeebies Land, Runaway Mine Train runs about 28 minutes typical and Congo River Rapids about 30, though Congo sits at 69.9% uptime over the last 60 days, so check the board before the walk.

On height limits, the site's ride pages say only that Wicker Man is family-friendly above its height limit and that Th13teen has a lower height requirement. They do not publish the figures in centimetres, so measure at home and check the ride pages on the official Alton Towers site before promising anyone a ride.

Scarefest, fireworks and the late closes

As published by the park and shown on the park page, Scarefest runs 26 September to 1 November 2026 on 25 selected dates, the Ultimate Fireworks Spectacular runs 6 to 8 November 2026, and Christmas at Alton Towers, a partial theme park opening, runs 27 November to 23 December 2026 on selected dates. The hours page shows 9pm closes across most of October and on the fireworks weekend, as published.

The park page says event nights are among the busiest of the season, so the plan holds but the numbers will not; on a 9pm close the 6pm figures are the ones that matter. Check the crowd calendar for your specific date, and if you can choose, the best time page has December at 27% crowd level against 77% in August, Wednesday at 51% against Saturday at 67%, and weekdays 10 points quieter than weekends on average.

How to use the reliability figures on the day

Across the last 60 operating days, 13 July to 10 September, the 40 tracked rides ran 79.6% of opening hours, which the site rates as patchy: 7 rides excellent, 8 good, 14 patchy, 11 poor. Over that window Wicker Man ran 94%, Oblivion 90.1%, Galactica 88.3%, Nemesis Reborn 87.5%, The Smiler 87.1%, Th13teen 80.4% and Rita 80.3%. The worst single day was 9 September, when 32.9% of ride hours were lost and 38 of 40 rides went down at some point.

Four ways to turn that into decisions.

  • Check the live board before you leave the entrance. The reliability page counts 1,011 late starts in the window, rides simply not running at opening. If Nemesis Reborn is not open at 10am, start with Galactica and Dark Forest and come back.
  • Do not save the ride you care about most for last. Breakdowns cluster at 5pm, with 706 of 1,837 recorded closures starting in that hour. The 6pm lull is real, but it is a bonus, not a guarantee.
  • Rita and Th13teen are the patchy pair, so ride them in the morning while they are both short and both running, rather than betting on a second chance.
  • If a ride is down, set a reopen alert on its page (a single alert is free; repeating alerts and the park cheat sheet are Park Queue Times Plus) and do something nearby rather than waiting outside.

Uptime includes weather closures: water rides shut in heavy rain and exposed coasters in high winds, so a wet forecast changes the plan more than any queue figure.

Questions people ask

What should I ride first at Alton Towers?

Nemesis Reborn. Its page shows 24 minutes at 10am and 52 by noon, the biggest climb of any headline ride. Galactica is next door and is also at its quietest at 10am, so ride the two together.

Is Wicker Man worth queueing for at opening?

No. Its hourly chart shows 50 minutes at 10am and 54 at its 11am peak, so arriving early saves you almost nothing. The only hour that is meaningfully shorter is 6pm at 33 minutes, so leave it for the end of a late day or the last hour of a 4pm day.

When is the afternoon lull?

Park-wide the average eases from 22 minutes at noon to 18 by 4pm, but the headline rides only really drop in the 6pm hour on late-closing days. The Smiler and Oblivion dip over lunch, so treat noon to 1pm as their lull and the last hour as everyone else's.

How reliable is Alton Towers?

Patchy, at 79.6% of opening hours across 40 rides over the last 60 operating days. Wicker Man at 94% is the dependable one and the Skyride at about 48% is the one not to plan around. Check the reliability page the night before and the live board at the gate.
